Cancellation Policy: You will have a scheduled day and estimated time for each scheduled service. If you need to cancel / reschedule within 24 hours of your appointment, you forfeit that service and your deposit. If you know in advance that you will need to cancel a service and inform us at least 24 hours ahead of your appointment, we will either attempt to reschedule that service, credit your account, or reimburse you upon your request within 10 business days. If you would prefer to reschedule and do so in accordance with the Cancellation Policy time frame above, we will make every effort to fit you into our schedule. Depending on the actual condition and size of the vehicle being detailed, this schedule can change. Each vehicle is owned and maintained differently, and Xclusive Autoworks Inc. may find it necessary to schedule more time in order to complete a satisfactory job.

Deposit Policy: All deposits are to secure materials and time for you scheduled project. We generally take up to 20% deposit for all projects and appointments. This covers the labor and cost of your consultation and is NON-REFUNDABLE. Again, all deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE.

Paint Sealant Guarantee: If the vehicle’s exterior is maintained properly, we guarantee that the paint sealant applied will remain on the surface of the vehicle for at least 6 months. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. recommends a re-application of the paint sealant every 3 to 4 months in order to obtain maximum protection. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for improper care or improper maintenance of the exterior paint protection provided. Provided the vehicle is properly maintained, the high-grade chemicals it uses are tested and manufactured to perform under normal driving conditions. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for the following: abnormal wear and tear, extreme weather and/or poor driving conditions, over spray, industrial fallout, bird excrement, tree sap, bee pollen, egg, bologna, water spots any corrosive or foreign chemical substance, improper cleaning maintenance, and other commercial car washing facilities or detailers causing the paint sealant to fail.

Scratches and Dings: Most cars have wash-mark scratches and small dings from normal wear and tear or from commercial car wash facilities. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for these types of minor imperfections. Until the automobile has been completely prep washed, it is difficult to see every little blemish, scratch, wash mark, small ding, or dent. Therefore, Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for any type of pre-existing damage caused by other sources, detailers, or all other un-controlled elements.

Vehicle Inspection: It is the owner’s responsibility to be available for the initial and final vehicle inspections. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. will not begin any scheduled work without the signed, written consent of the owner or owner’s representative. If either person is not available for a pre or final inspection, then Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for any customer dissatisfaction. It is the owner’s responsibility to be aware of the scheduling of each detail job and to be available or send a representative for final inspection upon completion of the detail. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. reserves the right to add additional charges for time spent waiting after the final detail has been completed. It is the owner’s responsibility to reset and check all electrical components, seat settings, stereo settings, buttons, knobs, and childproof settings after completion of detail.

Right of Refusal: Xclusive Autoworks Inc. reserves the right to refuse service on any vehicle or for any person.

Pre-Existing Damage: Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for any pre-existing damage it may find during the normal course of detailing the interior or exterior of any vehicle. It is difficult to find pre-existing damage during the initial inspection, especially if the vehicle is dirty and cluttered with debris or personal items left in the vehicle. Older vehicles usually have many interior and exterior components that have broken, worn out, faded, or become loose and cracked. If Xclusive Autoworks Inc. should break, disconnect, or damage any component of a client’s vehicle, it will bring this to his or her attention before completing the final detail. This includes but not limited to any peeling of paint during the removal of vinyl, decals, emblems, and paint protection film.

Wheels / Rims: Most wheel rims are under constant abuse from general road conditions, metal brake dust, and washing conditions. They commonly have multiple stains, dings, pits and scratches caused by normal driving conditions, metal brake dust, or other commercial car wash facilities. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for pre-existing damage of the vehicle’s wheel rims or wheel covers.

Engine Detailing: Most engine components today are completely protected by manufacturer’s devices. Rarely does Xclusive Autoworks Inc. see issues with an engine malfunction after the engine detail. In the case of any issue, check engine light, engine malfunction or other damages, Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for repair or replacement. The owner of the vehicle assumes full liability of all damages. Xclusive Autoworks Inc. is not responsible for pre-existing engine damage or engine malfunctions.

Final Payment Due: Once Xclusive Autoworks Inc. has completed the final detail job, payment is due immediately. Unless prior arrangements have been made in writing, it is the owner or owner’s representative’s responsibility to have payment ready as agreed upon in the initial invoice. ALL PROJECTS ARE SOLD AS-IS.

Key Return Policy: Xclusive Autoworks Inc. will return the vehicle’s keys only to the owner or owner’s representative and no one else. It is the owner or owner’s representative’s responsibility to obtain the keys from Xclusive Autoworks Inc. upon completion and final inspection of the detailed vehicle.

Window Films – Release of Liability: By signing below I acknowledge that there is a risk of damage to my vehicle that may occur as a result of tinting or removing film on my windows, and I release Xclusive Autoworks Inc. of liability for any damages. I also understand that damage can occur as a result of normal installation processes, removal procedures, or from any other unforeseeable factors. I have had the opportunity to ask any questions prior to my installation and fully release Xclusive Autoworks Inc. of any damages to my property. Some damages that are rare but can occur are damages to: electrical/electronics, interior headliners, interior cloth or leather, clips, door panels, rubber gaskets and seals, glass (cracks, scratches, breakage), and paint. Please note this is not a conclusive list. I understand that it is my responsibility to choose a film that is legal to my vehicle’s state or to acquire proper medical exemption for the window film that I choose. I release Xclusive Autoworks Inc. of any and all liability related to window films.

How to wash your vinyl wrap

This is how you should wash your car with a vinyl wrap OR COLOR CHANGE PAINT PROTECTION FILM

This advice goes for 3m VINYL wraps, Avery, KPMF, Stek, Pure PPF and COLOR CHANGE PAINT PROTECTION FILMS

The video above demonstrates how we wash cars that are currently wrapped in color change vinyl. This particular truck was wrapped in KPMF Blue Black Iridescent. But the same rules apply for a 3m vinyl wrap, Avery vinyl wrap, or any color change PPF like Stek and PurePPF.

Here is a short and sweet summary of the process:

FIRST RINSE THE VEHICLE - Use clean water to remove loose dirt and debris.
NEXT USE A GENTLE PH NEUTRAL SOAP – Pick a wrap-safe, pH-neutral car soap (no harsh chemicals).CarPro Reset, Meguiar's Gold Class
USE A SOFT MICROFIBER - Wash from top to bottom, one section at a time, with light pressure and never push too hard
RINSE YOUR SOAP OFF - Make sure no soap is left behind and drys on the surface
DRY WITH A SOFT AND CLEAN MICROFIBER - Pat dry instead of dragging the towel to avoid scratching. If dragging, use a very large towel with some quick detailer spray to help lubricate as shown in the video.

Here are some critical Do's and Don'ts when washing a wrapped car. These are directly from the manufacturers

✔ Wash your car every 2 weeks or sooner if dirty

✔ You can use touchless car washes if hand washing isn’t possible

✔ Immediately s pot clean bird droppings, bugs and sap

✔ Use IPA isopropyl alcohol (diluted) to clean tough spots (70% Mixed with water)

✔ Pressure wash safely under 1200 psi, a 40° wide fan nozzle, and at least 12″ away from the vehicle

✔ Park in the shade or indoors when possible to reduce UV fading as the sun will age your wrap more rapidly

DON'T

✘ No washing for the first 48 to 72 hours after installation.

✘ No automatic brush washes or stiff bristle brushes

✘ No wax or polish with petroleum distillates or carnauba waxes

✘ No harsh chemicals (acidic, alkaline, or even alcohol based unless provided by the manufacturer)

✘ Never aim your pressure washer at wrap edges or at steep angles.

✘ Never use any abrasive sponges, stiff brushes, or scrubbing pads.

Proper care will keep your vinyl wrap or colored PPF looking as perfect as the day you first picked it up. How to wash and maintain your vinyl wrap

Taking care of your new custom vinyl wrap on your car is important to ensure its longevity and appearance. Here are some tips that we recommend on how to wash vinyl wrap:

Only wash by hand: Wash your car regularly with gentle pH-neutral car soap and clean water (Refer to the wash video above). We recommend not using high-pressure washers, as they can lift and damage the edges of the vinyl wrap.
No harsh chemicals: Don’t use abrasive or harsh cleaning agents on the vinyl wrap. Only use gentle soaps and cleaners specifically designed for car wraps. Don’t use polishes on any satin/matte vinyl wraps.
Soft microfibers or sponges: Use a soft microfiber towel or sponge for washing. Avoid abrasive materials like brushes that can scratch the vinyl and cause permanent damage.
Rinse fully: Rinse the car thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.
Pat dry or use an air blower: Instead of rubbing the wrap with a towel, pat it dry gently using an extra large microfiber drying towel. This helps in preventing any potential damage to the vinyl. If wiping, use a vinyl-safe quick detailer to help lubricate.
Avoid waxes: Vinyl wraps do not require waxing. Some waxes may contain ingredients that could harm the vinyl such as carnauba or abrasives. Check with the wrap manufacturer for specific recommendations.
Protect from direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the vinyl to fade over time. When possible, park your car away from direct sunlight.
Avoid scratches or excessive touching: Be careful about sharp objects or abrasive materials that could scratch the vinyl. Fingernails are the number one cause of cuts on vinyl wraps near the door areas. Also, avoid parking near bushes or trees with branches that may scratch the surface.

Always refer to the specific care instructions provided by the manufacturer of the vinyl wrap, as different products may have unique requirements. Every manufacturer has slightly different ways they recommend along with different products to use. This is something we can discuss with you in full detail at the time of choosing your vinyl wrap.

– All insect splatter and bird droppings occurring within 7 days of application should be removed carefully as soon as possible (green or purple bird droppings should be removed immediately!). CARPRO ECHO2 is recommended for this.
– Using automatic car washes is forbidden throughout the duration of this warranty

If you’re in the market to add paint protection to your vehicle but on the edge with getting a vinyl wrap then this is the solution. Matte or satin finish paint protection film is just as thick and protective as the high gloss finishes and will add a unique stealth look to your car or truck.

Choosing stealth over a gloss finish is an extremely common choice with car enthusiasts who want to add a unique finish to their vehicle without losing the factory color and finish of their vehicle. This film has the same protective qualities, thickness, and performance of a gloss clear bra. The installation technique and process is also extremely similar although we prefer to do a more thorough disassembly to provide a seamless look without glossy areas showing through trim. As you can see on this Tesla we removed all the trim to hide the edges of the Stek DynoMATT film.

Satin film can come in handy when you’re looking to protect factory satin finishes such as a matte finish Mercedes or even matte hoods on a Camaro and Dodge Challenger/Charger. How long until my car can get wet?

Whenever we release a vehicle it is fully cured and baked. This means the coating is safe to go outside. We do recommend you wait at least 5 days until exposing the finish to ANY soaps. Water from rain is okay, but no rinsing, washing, or waterless washing. We only recommend removing bugs or bird bombs within this time period.

How long until I can wash after ceramic coating my car?

It is best to wait at least 5 days after pickup before washing your vehicle or exposing it to any soaps. If bugs or bird bombs hit your vehicle, we recommend removing them immediately with a gentle mix of waterless wash (CarPro Echo works great). Always use high grade (minimum of 70/30 blend) microfiber towels and discard after using to remove bugs or bird bombs. Both bird bombs and bugs can etch and cause damage if left on the surface even if only for a few hours.

What is the proper way to wash my ceramic coating?

Follow the two bucket wash method using CarPro Reset as your wash soap. Always rinse thoroughly before washing and after washing. It is required that you always dry the vehicle fully after rinsing. You cannot rinse and leave the vehicle to dry on its own. This will cause irreversible damage from spotting. If you want to clean your vehicle, always commit to a complete two bucket wash and drying. Our personal preference is drying using a cordless leaf blower which will knock off 90% of the water from the surface. Other soaps may contain silicones and waxes that can clog the finish of your vehicle. Can I wax my car after a ceramic coating or paint protection film install?

We recommend against using any waxes, sealants, or glazes after your installation. The only sealant that can be used on your coated vehicle is either CarPro Echo2, Reload or Elixir. Any other topper may void your warranty and congest/clog your finish. No polish, abrasives, or glazes can be used without risking damage and voiding your warranty. By using these three safe products, we can ensure that your coating or clear bra will last for years to come without issue.

Will a ceramic coating help resist bird bombs and acid rain water etching?

Yes, a ceramic coating will do a good job resisting both water marks and bird droppings. We do highly recommend avoiding sprinkler systems as they contain a high mineral content that will congest and leave marks that may be quite difficult to remove from every surface of your vehicle, coated or not. Bird droppings can etch and eat through clear coat within minutes, so we do recommend using a quick detailer to remove any droppings as soon as possible. Bug splatter is also extremely harmful to your finish and we recommend removing them whenever possible.

Water repellency has faded over time, is something wrong?

Over time, contaminants can build up and affect the coating. The good news is that a good wash with CarPro Reset on a regular basis will help avoid this issue. Also using Iron-X on a regular basis (monthly or bimonthly) can help avoid this issue. Topping your finish with CarPro Reload or Elixir will help revitalize and return the upper hydrophobic layer to its former glory.

Can I use a pressure washer to clean my car?

While a pressure washer is a good option, we recommend proceeding with extreme caution. A pressure washer can inject water into your paint protection film and begin to cause lifting, injected water bubbles and premature failure. Damage caused by a pressure washer is not covered in your warranty. Using caution, a lower pressure washer (1800psi and lower), and using a wide fan tip will help reduce the likelihood of these issues.

Can I, or should I use a car cover?

We recommend against ever using a car cover in most cases. Car covers generally cause damage to corners of the paint and will act as sand paper if the cover and the car isn’t totally clean and dust free. Car covers can and will cause swirling and marring to your finish that is not covered by warranty.

With many factors going into pricing out the cost of paint protection film you can see that shopping around between installers can be very confusing. We understand this and are here to help you through the process of finding the right installer. This article is here for people who are both new and already educated on the process of buying and shopping for clear bra paint protection film. We will begin by outlining the factors that go into pricing and how we adjust our costs according to your specific needs.

What is the condition of the vehicle?

Same with ceramic coatings, every single install of paint protection begins with paint correction and careful preparation of the surface. You do not want any contamination, dust or dirt on the surface of the car. This is key before installing something that is mostly permanent like clear bra.

It is a common mistake to believe that a brand new vehicle shipped directly from the dealership is in perfect condition. We all think that it should be that way. I agree, in a perfect world, it would be. But that is not the case with most new cars being delivered. In conclusion, most vehicles will require some degree of paint correction and significant preparation before installing clear bra. This could range from minimal prep $0 to $500 to $800. All depending on the condition of the vehicle.

How much coverage do you want?

This is an important part of pricing out your total cost for paint protection film. How many panels do you want covered? Do you want all of the edges hand trimmed and tucked in? Do you want a seamless and custom installation? Or are you simply looking to protect the most vulnerable high impact regions like the front nose, the hood, the lower rocker panels?

Determining how long you plan on keeping the car will help you decide the above questions and help you find out what type of owner you are. So if you’re a neurotic type owner you may be more interested in going with a custom installation covering most major impact regions. This can be much more labor intense than doing a more simplified install using patterns.

And don’t be worried about patterns, modern software these days offer extremely precise patterns. Designs that are years ahead of even 1-3 years ago and because of this you can even achieve clean and tucked edges with pattern cuts now. So you can sleep comfortably knowing your car is protected properly.

How difficult is the vehicle to wrap?

Another thing to consider is how difficult your car is to wrap. This could make a huge difference in the price of your paint protection film install. A simple flat hood with no vents is much easier to install than a curved hood with multiple close vents. Take for example a Tesla Model 3 hood versus a Dodge Hellcat Redeye Hood as shown above. Those complex curves will take much longer to install with a lot more trimming and time involved.

Along with the difficulty like curves and odd shapes is the way the installation is performed. Some cars need to be custom trimmed to get full coverage and reaching these areas can be very difficult and require us to bring in certified technicians to remove panels for us to get access. This will also be a factor in pricing your specific project. For instance you don’t want any random person taking apart your car. We only use properly trained techs to do any removals and installations.

Do you want other protection services?

When factoring in the cost of paint protection film alongside ceramic coatings and paint correction. Timing and preparation comes into play. Combining all three processes will save you money in the long run as they all have some processes in common. Although we do prefer to repeat the washing and cleaning in between paint protection film and paint correction. All of these factors will come into play when choosing what package or combination of packages suit your needs and budget.

Paint Protection Film is a specifically designed urethane film made to protect your car’s thin and sensitive paint against damage. When driving on Long Island, paint protection film can prevent unsightly rock chips, salt and road damage, damage, and minor scratching. HOW IS PPF INSTALLED?

Proper preparation is critical to a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing PPF install. All panels have to be completely flawless, dirt, dust, scratch, and chip-free. All of your crevices, corners, edges, and trim have to be thoroughly cleaned multiple times to remove built-up dust and grime. This holds true even for new cars. With a new car prep at Xclusive Autoworks, even straight off the delivery truck, the preparation time can be upwards of 8 hours. With some of our installations, we do prefer to use pre-cut installation kits, it has become our preference to custom design , shape, and trim our film installs. Detail it right The first time

This brand new Porsche Cayman S was delivered to my client in very poor condition. Although the car was “clean” it was not properly detailed. Being a very rich and deep black, all imperfections are clearly visible and stick out like a sore thumb. On a beautiful driver’s car like this, a proper and swirl free detail was exactly what the client needed. Who wants to drive a beautiful piece of art that is covered in swirls and scratches? We scheduled a Stage 4 Detail with no paint coating such as Opti-Coat Pro or Cquartz Finest at my specially equipped detailing studio in Massapequa.

Before the paint correction detail, this Porsche was covered in swirls, scratches, and wash-induced marring. It looked as though the car has seen 50k miles of harsh driving and drive-through car washes. But this car was black, and black cars are my forte.

As you can see in the picture below, the panel is now swirl free and the clarity has been restored to the finish. Swirls severely hinder gloss and luster and with the removal of the swirls, the vehicles depth has drastically improved. This Porsche became as glossy as it can get.

Acura TL Paint Correction Cquartz Detail

Most people who see a car in this condition would assume that the paint is gone and cannot be restored. This client was interested in reconditioning and restoring his black Acura TL A-Spec and he found the right detailer. We scheduled a full paint correction detail that will then be protected by Cquartz UK. Before correction I noted all of the areas where the paint would eventually fail. The entire car was covered in paint failure and chipping that was soon to fail. This was something the client understood and we went with a thick and cost effective coating to protect the paint for as long as it can last. In cases like this, it is the detailers responsibility to inform the client of the paint failure that will eventually happen. But for now, the goal was to make the car look presentable and something the owner can be proud of.

As you can see, even after extensive paint correction, the hood has blemishes that are actually spots of paint failure. It’s a shame, but overall the appearance has been dramatically improved.

The paint correction process restored and recondition the surface of the clear coat. In the end I was able to remove around 90% of the defects (not including the failure). Sadly, nothing could be done about the regions of paint failure. After topping with Cquartz UK, the surface is protected for up to 2 years where the owner only needs to carefully wash his car. No more waxing or sealing for a long time. The coating also provides the surface with a very nice level of depth and gloss, unmatched by any other wax.

Porsche Minor Paint Correction Detail

As a professional detailer on Long Island, I rely heavily on referrals and word of mouth. I feel referral jobs are very personal and they show that customers truly do appreciate your work. This detail was a referral from a very good client of mine. He came to me knowing that his Porsche 911 ‘Black Edition’ was in glossy and in good shape. But I knew that I could make that black even deeper and even more glossy.

We scheduled for a Stage III Enhancement Detail which is a full service detail along with a single stage paint correction. Here are some examples of the condition of the paint after washing, claying, and prepping for paint correction. It definitely wasn’t flawless but for such a difficult color to maintain it wasn’t as bad as it could be.

Here is some of the results of the single stage paint correction on the hood of the Porsche. Very significant improvement throughout the entire car.

And on to the money shots. After the single stage paint correction, the paint is jeweled and looking as glossy as it can ever be!

Audi A6 Paint Correction & Opti-Coat Detail

Swirls? BUT The car is brand new!

This is exactly what a customer would think when picking up their brand new Audi from the dealership. Fresh off of the showroom floor, delicately handled and prepared for you to come take her home. No new car deserves to be covered in severe gloss reducing swirls. The proud owner of this brand new German driving machine wanted to protect his investment and prevent any further damage.

The best product to protect your paint over years is Opti-Coat Pro . No other coating, wax, or sealant will happily provide a 5 year warranty against failure. To apply Opti-Coat Pro, the paints surface needs to be perfect and swirl free. This is where my skills and years of paint correction experience come into play.

We scheduled the client with a Stage IV Paint Correction and Opti-Coat Pro detail. More information on this package can be found here .

Car was delivered to my shop early in the morning, roughly 6 AM. I was expecting the paint to not be perfect as Brilliant Black is a difficult color to maintain and I do not expect dealerships to understand how to safely clean this color. But even I did not expect it to be like this. Long Island’s rough winter and slushy roads did not treat this Audi well.

A BRAND NEW CAR CAN LOOK LIKE THIS

My biggest fear. Brilliant black paint that has almost no gloss and heavily covered in deep long running swirls. This type of swirling is caused by poor wash techniques and possibly wiping the vehicle down with a really low quality towel. Just by looking at the car, I could guess that they washed with a broom and some soap and dried with a house towel. This picture was taken after carefully prepping with a foam presoak and washing using the 2 bucket method.

MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE

To learn more about the vehicles paint, I always take measurements before paint correction. The thickness can tell us if the car has ever been repainted or worked on before. In this case, we have an average reading with enough paint to safely continue.

PAINT CORRECTION

After prepping the surface and taping off the trim and delicate areas I began the paint correction process. I started on the hood to test for the best possible correction method that removes the least amount of clear coat. Less clear coat means less protection and ultimately can lead to premature failure. To protect the paint from failing and wearing out, we will be coating the entire car in Opti-Coat Pro which builds up nearly 3 microns of protection. That’s over 100x the thickness of any wax.

Every panel that was painted or clear-coated had serious swirls and scratches. I took my time and dedicated 20 hours to correcting every single panel and every single surface. Specialists are far and few. This particular client contacted me through a referral and was very interested in protecting his new toy. In terms of durability, ease of maintenance, and reliability, his best choice was Opti-Coat Pro . During the winter time, Long Island gets covered in road salt which can severely damage this classic roadster. We wanted to protect the new finish and prevent any further damage as this Porsche was recently repainted. Luckily it only required some mild paint correction and detailing prior to opticoat application. We chose to schedule a Stage Three detail with Opti-Coat Pro application.

It is always good practice to take paint thickness readings across all panels before correction. Paint correction and buffing removes paint. We want to be safe and make sure we are not removing too much paint and jeopardizing the integrity of the paint. In this case, we have tons of paint to work with as this was recently resprayed generously.

Preparation is key with Opti-Coat Pro applications. After the paint correction process the car is carefully hand washed and dried to remove any polishing dust and residue. To remove any oils left behind, by my hands or the polishes, I then prep the entire vehicle with a strong alcohol solution. After carefully inspecting the paint for any other imperfections or blemishes, we are ready for the application process.

MODEL S GETS AN OPTICOAT DETAIL

Client was interested in starting off his new car ownership on the right foot. He wanted the best paint protection with the easiest maintenance. Providing a 5 year warranty, an Opti-Coat Pro detail was the best choice for him . Tesla’s are notorious for having extremely thin paint which can lead to premature failure especially with Long Island’s damaging winters. Opti-Coat Pro is the only paint coating that can provide the protection to ensure his paint will not fail and protect his investment.

The detail began with a mild paint correction requiring only a few hours of intensive polishing to remove any defects from the surface. As Opti-Coat is permanent , we need to make sure the surface is as flawless as possible. We will not be able to go back and remove any scratches after the application. While detailing I use a combination of high power LED lights and strong halogen lights to expose all swirls and defects in the paint.

Time was limited for me and I was pressed to finish the detail within in a full day so I only took a few pictures after the Opti-Coat Pro application. The below vehicle was coated from head to toe. The facings of the wheels, all paint, and all of the trim was protected. The glass we will be detailed and coated at a later point. With a windshield coating, my client will have no issues navigating the Long Island expressway during a severe thunderstorm. The water simply beeds up and slides off.

While prepping the Audi for Opti-Coat, I always start with the deironizing and degreasing the wheels. The red spots you see below are areas reacting with heavy iron particles embedded in the wheel. After prepping, the entire car got one more hand wash then wiped down with an alcohol solution to remove any oils left behind. Now we are ready to apply the permanent coating.

All painted surfaces are coating and permanently protected. In this particular detail we coated all exterior paintwork, the wheels, and even the door jambs. This will make washing and maintenance unbelievably easy. The wheels will stay clean through the harsh Long Island winters and the door jambs won’t build up excessive amounts of grime and dirt.

Tesla Model S Opti-Coat Pro Detail

PERMANENT PROTECTION

For these two Tesla Model S’, Opti-Coat Pro was the only choice. Tesla’s are notorious for having extremely thin clear coats which, over time, wear down. For a car that many buyers plan on keeping for years to come, that is a major problem. Opti-Coat Pro provides a protective layer 2 microns thick. That’s about 100x thicker than any wax or sealant on the market. With Long Island’s harsh winters ahead, the owner wanted to protect his investments. Both cars, white and silver, got the same treatment. A full service detail, paint correction, and Opti-Coat Pro application.

I started with the Silver Model S. First I pre-rinsed and decontaminated with Iron-X to remove all embedded particles. Then I washed with the 2 bucket method and then finally began the claying process. These precautions were taken to make sure nothing was left in the paint before beginning correction.

The red substance you see is the Iron-X dissolving iron particles embedded in the wheels.

I was pressed for some on both cars so I took very little before photos. The first photo is an after shot of the black trim surrounding the panoramic roof.

After I made sure that every single panel was flawless. I can finally begin the coating process. Opti-Coat Pro is permanent and very durable. Preparation steps are very important. We do not want to permanently seal in scratches, scuffs, or swirls.

After Opti-Coat Pro had been applied and cured, I went around the vehicle and dressed all trim and rubber surfaces. The dressing used for this application was waterproof and will provide a nice sheen on all plastic and rubber surfaces for weeks to come.

After completing the Silver Tesla Model S, I went home and got prepared to tackle the white one. Processes were pretty much the same across both vehicles. Rinse, decontaminate with Iron-X, hand wash, clay bar, then paint correction.

On both Tesla’s, I applied Opti-Coat Pro to the wheels. This really helps with the maintenance. Brake dust comes off much more easily and it can save a lot of time from scrubbing and rubbing against the wheels surface.

1971 Cutlass Winter Protection Detail

Long Island Detailing

A long time client just picked up a new show queen, a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Winter is not too far away and he wanted to make sure his queen was clean and protected. So we booked a Winterization detail which included a full hand wash, decontamination+clay, and sealing all exterior surfaces. As soon as I got to the vehicle, I noticed it had been waxed before with something cheap that stained some trim and left hard white residue behind. My coatings will never leave residue or hard white staining. I first had to decontaminate to remove all of the leftover wax then got to work detailing. After claying, I coated all exterior surfaces including the glass, trim, and soft top with a long lasting sealant that will waterproof the car through the winter. Protecting it from snow, ice, and most importantly road salts. Long Island is notorious for harmful road salts and sand.

Paint Correction Detail on a Built Evo

And this built Mitsubishi Evolution deserved the best . The client wanted the car to look as best as possible at an upcoming car show. The glossiest of the glossy. And what the client wants, the client gets. We schedule a full paint correction detail and I immediately got to work.

Before starting the paint correction process the car was full washed, clayed, deironized, then taped off to protect the trim from being damaged during the process. Here we see the hood of the vehicle before starting correction.

I knew this was going to be a long process and the hood took about an hour of carefully correcting and working around the edges and trim. Below is after two stages of paint correction on the hood.

The doors and fenders were in even worse shape than the hood. As shown below, the swirls diffused most of the light and drastically took away from the potential gloss. We wanted maximum gloss, so the swirls must be r

Below is the before picture of the front fender. The deep blue color is dulled and the swirls are both distracting and unpleasant to look at. But no worries, I am a professional at correcting these problems.

And below you see the potential of the vehicle at its finest. Fully corrected and detailed the right way. Swirls removed and luster has been restored.

Subaru WRX Paint Correction Detail

PERFECTION isn’t easy

But neither is true detailing. As a professional detailer serving Long Island, NY, my goal is to provide the best possible services to my clients. My goal is perfection and I settle for nothing less. This particular client bought the vehicle in this condition and didn’t contribute to the heavy scratching and swirling. The goal was to establish a flawless finish so that the owner can appreciate the “new car” feeling. I thrive off a challenge and I knew that correcting this particular WRX was going to be difficult.

Here is a quick example of the heavy swirling and scratching on the door panel.

And here is the fully corrected door panel. This took quite a few heavy passes and some finishing passes in order to remove all of the deep scratches and swirling.

The front door panel was in even worse condition. Look at how much of the gloss and reflection is diffused through the swirling.

The finished product is an intensely glossy and reflective surface.

No stones (or panels in this case) are left unturned. This is the upper pillar between the windows and the roof. Many detailers are scared of this area. The paint is generally very thin and caution has to be taken to not burn through the paint. Also the surface is generally very small (3-2 inches) and smaller tools and pads are required to not burn the trim.

I am not scared of this region and have plenty of experience working with thin paint in tight areas. It took quite a bit of effort and time to properly fix this region but it was a major success. All of the swirling was removes and left behind a fantastic finish.

Sadly the headlights are fading from the inside and need to be removed at a later point. The exterior of the headlights were wetsanded, buffed, and sealed. But there is a leak from the inside causing internal oxidation. This can only be repaired by removing, sanding, and sealing the headlights all over again. This was saved for a later time.

All exterior surfaces were sealed with a long term polymer sealant which will outlast any conventional wax or over the counter products. Generally giving the client about 3-6 months of water and UV protection.

Audi S5 Paint Correction Detail

Long Island Detailers are a dime a dozen…

This particular client was looking for someone who was different and had an eye for perfection . He found the right man for the job. The car was recently purchased as a certified pre-owned through an Audi dealership. Dealerships are notorious for giving the “quick detailing special.” They glazed the entire vehicle before selling which essentially hid all of the scratches, swirls, and deep sanding marks. It looks as though they had tried to remove all of the deep scratches by filling them and sanding only to then fail and gave up. There were plenty of sanding marks and scratches all over. We scheduled an appointment to get as close to 100% correction as possible. There were some limitations with deep damage on both bumpers but I was prepared to do my best.

This was the general condition of the paint. This Audi S5 was definitely not looking it’s best.

Got to work immediately by pre-treating the entire car in a deironizer which will decontaminate the surface and dissolve all iron particles. This process is crucial prior to paint correction as it ensures the surface is completely clean, sterile, and free from particles that can scratch while buffing. The wheels also received similar treatment which broke down the difficult-to-clean german brake dust.

After washing, degreasing, and decontaminating the car, I began to prep for paint correction and went to work. This particular Audi was blessed to have the new ceramic clear coat which is a real pain to correct but I managed to get very reasonable results. Much better than how the dealership left him. Sorry for the lack of photographs but it was difficult to get the full 50/50 on camera.

In the end this was a very successful detail and the client was pleased with the results. He can finally enjoy hes new car and start fresh. He shopped around for the right detailer only to find me, someone who is very particular about every fine little detail. He came to the right man and his new Audi could not look any better.

Lamborghini Gallardo Opti-Coat

Gray Gallardo Brought Back to Black

There are plenty of Lamborghini’s on Long Island. One in every color can be spotted if you look carefully. So how does your Lamborghini stand out? How can you get people to really look at your car? I say, “Detail it to become as glossy as a mirror.” This particular client found me through a shop that I often to detailing work for. The original plan for this particular Lamborghini was to wrap it flat black but why waste such a beautiful super car? We had to do some mild polishing and cleaning to remove the clear bra properly before wrapping so we decided to detail a test panel on the hood and let the results speak for themselves.

After displaying how much gloss and how deep of a finish achieved, the client decided to detail the car and forget the vinyl wrap. He made the best decision in his life. We scheduled a 2 day appointment for 8 hours each day. I started the day by giving the entire car a thorough wash and degrease. Started off on the wheels with some Sonax Full Effect as seen in the pictures.

The condition of this particular Gallardo was horrendous but not unexpected. Proper care of a black car is difficult and takes experience and knowledge of the proper wash techniques which few understand and even less actually abide by. Here are some before shots I took before detailing this Gallardo.

I found the most effective method of leveling the paint without removing too much while detailing a test spot on the hood. I proceeded to follow that method along with a few other various combinations on the rear deck. Here are some pictures I took during the detail to display the level of correction achieved.

All of the panels were in serious need of intense paint correction and ever panel was heavily compounded and polished to level out most of the scratches and all of the swirling. The difficulty in detailing a Gallardo is mostly due to the exotic and intricate body lines and thin panels. Many panels had to be worked with a 3″ pad and a smaller machine to fit in the tight areas and to prevent burning through the paint. Extra care was taken on these smaller panels but they were corrected nonetheless.

Shown below are just some of the various pads used during the correction process. Many difference combinations had to be used to achieve flawless results.

After the 3 step correction process and properly prepping the surface of the vehicle the, Lamborghini was ready for one of the best surface protectants in the world. Opti-coat. Opti-coat is a permanent ceramic clear coat with superior scratch resistance and protection from chemical etching and damage. Opti-coat is similar to a wax in the sense that it protects the paint but Opti-coat is far more superior and will provide much more protection in every dimension. After putting in 16 hours of correction, you sure don’t want to have to go through the entire process again in weeks. You want the best and the best this car will get.

Chevy Silverado SS Paint Correction

Rare Silverado SS Detail

A long term client of mine finally decided that he was ready to do some serious paint correction and restoration on his rare Chevy Silverado SS. These cars are not common and this is only the second one I have ever seen on Long Island. It is a second owner car and before he found me, the washes weren’t done using the best techniques which the paint clearly showed. For years I tried to convince him to do some paint correction just to bring out the depth of the paint and really make the black shine. I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me but we decided to do a basic 2 step paint correction but not 100%. The best bang for the buck we went with as the car is his daily and gets a lot of use.

Went through the basic wash and decontamination stages. Full 2 bucket hand wash, degrease the wheels, wheel wells, door jambs, and crevices. Then clay bar all painted surfaces and tape off to protect the trim, and my pads, during the paint correction process. After taping off the truck, I took some before pictures.

As you can see from the pictures, the paint was hammered, swirled, and marred. It was in dire need of real good paint correction and detailing. Being one of the only Silverado SS’s on Long Island, I had to make the truck shine and be presentable. I taped off a test panel and went to work finding the best pad and polish combination that got good results without cutting too deep. I found a happy median and went to work on the rest of the truck.

The above pictures show the first step of paint correction, the second step helped refine the rest of the paint and maximize the gloss. Here are some more pictures during the correction process. The Silverado was making a ton of progress and was given a new life.

Overall we got an extensive level of paint correction done in only an afternoon. The owner was extremely satisfied with the job and will continue to be a customer for life. As a professional, I feel providing for the customer and designing the best detail package possible will make a happy customer. In this case, the customer was beyond satisfied. Going above and beyond is what I do best.

I let the pictures do the talking. Some detailers fear black paint because it shows your every mistake. When detailed properly, it can also be the best showcase of your work and diligence.

Audi S4 Paint Correction + Opticoat

DETAILING BRILLIANT BLACK

Paint is a professional detailers worst nightmare. The color is extremely soft and difficult to work with. It scratches easily and scuffs even easier so corrections are difficult and take a long time. I was up for the challenge. The client wanted the vehicle to be in 100% perfect condition and coated to last. We went with Opti-coat 2.0 which is a permanent ceramic coating offering a hardness rating of 9H and a lifetime durability. This is the absolute best coating on the market but requires a perfectly sterile environment and surface to bond.

The condition of the vehicle was consistently dirty across all panels and wheels. The high metallic content brake dust was embedded into the rims. The photo below of the clay bar was after 1 pass of a 1×1 square foot panel. Needless to say, it took quite some time to perfectly clean the surface.

The paint correction process was a two stage process. The above photographs were after the first stage of compounding but before the final cut and jeweling. Some heavier RDS’s were unable to be fully removed but under normal lighting conditions are not visible. Overall the correction process was very successful and transformed the exterior of this vehicle.

The Opticoat 2.0 process is delicate and prepwork is key. Polishes, compounds, and even your fingers leave oils behind. All oils and residue MUST be removed prior to application. An alcohol wipedown was performed before application to ensure a perfectly sterile surface. Opticoat provide a permant layer of protection that cannot be removed via chemicals so proper application the first time around is crucial.

The garage I worked in was very small so I couldn’t take too many good shots from far. And those that I did take came out way too overexposed from the lighting. The entire process from wash/decontamination to Opti-coating took 11 hours .

2012 VW GTI Full Paint Correction Detail

Deep Black Metallic Made Even Deeper

Recommended through a client on VWVortex, this client scheduled an immediate paint correction to maximize the depth of this awesome color. Upon arrival, the clouds were heavy and using my 500w halogen, I inspected the paint. The paint seemed to be in fairly good condition so I went onto my normal wash method. The entire vehicle was decontaminated using an ironizer that dissolves particles dug deep into the paint. This pre-treatment process helps prevent scratching during the washing and claying processes. Wheels also were treated and degreased.

As you can see in the pictures above, the vehicle was plagued with hologramming. Most likely a poor and unprofessional new car detail provided by the dealership. This is very common on cars with sensitive paint. The dealership will be lazy and give the car a heavy compounding, leaving holograms behind, then hide them using a thick glaze. The next time the car is washed, the glaze is washed away leaving the true paint condition exposed. Glazing and waxing is not detailing. Keep reading on to learn what true detailing is.

Along with horrid hologramming, I found tons of white drops of heavy duty road paint. They must have painted a road my client was driving on and the paint splattered up onto the entire front end. This will take some solvents and careful detailing techniques to remove without damaging the surface. The sun was only out for a short period of time so there are not many true 50/50’s. My 500w halogen only showed half of the damage.

After the tedious paint correction process. I rewashed the car, clayed and waxed the door jambs, sealed the exterior paintwork and glass, dressed the tires and other trim. By this point the car was full hydrophobic and protected from the elements for the months to come.

Mustang Shelby GT500 Paint Correction

Mustang Shelby GT500 Paint Correction

This particular client found me through a friend of a friend. He is a huge mustang enthusiast and has had them all. This one is my personal favorite. The car was well maintained and he preferred to hand wash the car himself in his spare time which definitely helped keep it in decent shape. There were still swirling and scratches all over the paint which can be attributed to poor wash techniques but overall the vehicle was well maintained. We decided to go with a heavy single stage polish and a strong protective wax to keep the car looking great all summer long.

Here are some before-pictures showing the condition the vehicle was:

After following the initial washing, decreasing, decontaminating, and claying processes, I went right into polishing. The factory paint is softer than most whites, but it was still white, and it was very hard compared to other colors. The polishing process took about 6-7 hours total. Here are some 50/50’s and after-detail shots.

The trim had faded over the 6 years that this car was on the road. It seemed to be a very common issue and so we decided to go with a long lasting and durable coating to protect the trim along with providing a clean matte finish. The same went for the tires to keep the clean, new, and fresh theme going on this classic Mustang.

Sadly I couldn’t take as many before and after detail photos as I wanted to. I really loved this car but I was too preoccupied detailing to stop and take pictures. Overall me and the client were very happy with the final results. This Mustang came out of the driveway looking better than it had off the showroom floor. Saab 9-2x Paint Correction

Saab, a well known Swedish automotive manufacturer, sometimes uses platforms from other companies and rebrands them as their own. They give the car a facelift, some upgraded interior and other misc. parts. In this case, they took the 2006-2007 WRX Wagon platform and made it into a luxurious sport wagon. My clients vehicle was starting to show its age and needed another facelift, just as Saab did to the WRX wagon 7 years ago. From a quick glance, the car looked to be well kept, and it was cared for, but some parts were fading and there was severe marring and swirling all over.

There were also many deep scratches across the passenger doors as show in the picture below.

The car got the usual before-detail regiment

Wash and degrease (including the jambs and wells)
Clay bar all painted surfaces
Taped off all sharp edges and trim

After getting the vehicle prepped I tested out a few panels to find the best possible pad to compound combination. I got to work immediately as I knew I had a lot of work ahead of myself. Here are some 50/50 shots of the panels. All of the scratches were superficial enough to be removed from the doors. The hood scoop was severely faded (as seen on the right side) but most of the oxidation was removed.

The paint correction process took about 7 hours to complete and overall was a huge success. Most if not all marring and swirling had been removed and the vehicle was looking better than it had coming off the showroom floor. Here are some more final shots after paint correction had been completed.

While the client was on his way to pick up the car I decided to dress all of the trim to balance out the contrast between the trim and the high gloss paint. I also buffed and restored his exhaust/exhaust tip. You can’t have a freshly detailed car and a dirty exhaust.

Sonax Full Effect How to Use

Cleaning Dirty Rims

Will never be easier. Sonax Full Effect is a pH balanced and acid free wheel cleaner that is super effective and easy to use. What Sonax relies heavily on is its special chemical design that dissolves iron particles by forming a water soluble iron complex. The formula is safe on painted wheels and will not damage clear coats.

Supplies Needed:

Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner
Various Brushes or Griot’s Garage Wheel Wands
Running water/hose

Directions for use:

Pre-Rinse wheels and hose off any heavy grime
Evenly spray Sonax on the wheel and wheel wells
Let the cleaner stand for 2-5 minutes or until it has turned blood red (this is normal and part of the process)
Scrub areas that are very dirty or areas with thick brake dust (be sure to use the proper gloves )
Rinse thoroughly

Volkswagen GLI Paint Correction Detail

MY FIGHT AGAINST A TORNADO

A Tornado Red Volkswagen GLI. This client found me through my Facebook profile which featured a handful of my recent paint correction jobs. He was desperate to get the paint back to 100% and eager to learn the proper wash and detail techniques to keep the car immaculate. We scheduled an appointment as soon as possible and I got to work immediately. From his photos online, this car looked to be well kept and properly detailed. I thought to myself, “could it really be that bad?”

This is how the vehicle looked upon arrival. From 5 feet, it looked good, but in direct sunlight you can see signs of poor wash techniques.

I began the wash process which included:

2 Bucket method wash
Gently degrease and wash the wheels/jambs
Clay barring all painted surfaces

And then got to taping off the vehicle for multiple purposes. One, to protect any plastic trim and rubber trim for being scuffed or stained during the paint correction process. And two, to protect the polishing pads from being broken, cut, or torn from any rough edges on the vehicle. This is a step many “detailers” skip including is previous one who stained multiple pieces of the trim. This is why I refuse to use waxes and compounds that have properties that will stain trim.

The sun kept coming and going at the worst possible times so it was hard to snap full 50/50 shots but here are some during the paint correction process.

One commonly scratched panel of both Volkswagen’s and Audi’s is their gloss trim. It is very sensitive to marring and swirling. I was able to polish out most of the scuffs, marring, and swirling from this one.

By the time I was finished with the paint correction, the sun was setting so was I was unable to grab any more bright shots. I waxed the painted surfaces and also the freshly powdercoated wheels, dressed the trim, and shined glass. Here are the completed shots after waxing and dressing the trim.

Overall me and the client were ecstatic about the results. The level of gloss achieved on this GLI was stunning and this car certainly went from show queen to show stopper. Without being a member of the Long Island Car Forum this client would have never found the best Long Island Detailer.

1994 Mazda Miata Paint Correction Detail

A DETAIL TO REMEMBER

A good friend and client of mine told me he picked up a 1994 Mazda Miata in red (honestly, it was more pink than red) that just needed a good wax (not a “detail”). He said it was in pretty good condition and thought that wax would bring it back to life. Over the years I’ve learned that whenever anyone says it, “just needs a good wax,” that really means it needs deep wet sanding, 3 stage compound and polish and a once in a life time gift from god to bring the paint back to life. I told him I need to see the car first before we jump into detailing it.

So I had him bring the car by and I saw how rough the car really was. What we decided to do was to bring the car as much back to life with about 4 hours worth of detailing. The car is very small so I figured, why not. Best bang for the buck he wanted. So with my goal of 4 hours, I went immediately work. I only snapped a handful of photos but they get the point across and show the work that was involved.

This is before correction but after washing and clay barring the entire car:

The client had the intentions of replacing the front bumper and rear trim piece. They literally had no paint left on them but I cleaned them up enough so that the car was presentable. He just wanted the car to look a little bit better than its current condition.

And here are the completed and also some 50/50 shots. The hood of the car was in the worst condition (besides the paintless bumper)

Overall the client, and his wallet, were extremely happy with the final product. The bumper wa looking much better for the time being and the rest of the car was no longer pink. For the time spent, I was very happy with the finish. I felt I could do more but there really was not much paint left. I also wanted to fill in the scratches but the client did not want to bother so I let it slide.

Soldering or Crimping Your Electrical Connections

Choosing between soldering or crimping your electrical connections

May seem difficult, but in reality, it is very simple. If you cannot get to the wires, use butt crimps. If you can get to the wires, or bring the wires out, use solder and heat shrink. I had some issues with people arguing over what is better (soldering or crimping) and that some can cause errors in sensors, so on, and so forth. The real issue isn’t the actual solder or crimp, it is the user.

Every good electrical connection starts with a good mechanical connection. This is the golden rule. So when you are choosing between solder or crimps, you need to remember that it is the connection, not the connectors. A cold joint is when the connection is a solid, mechanical, or physical connection between the two conductors. This can happen with poor soldering techniques. A cold joint will causes sensor misreadings and throw off your 02 sensor when using solder. And this is where the wives tale began.

In the following video I will show my readings I found while testing the resistance between solder and crimps.

The results were inconclusive showing that bare wire got 0.5 ohms, the wire twisted together got 0.5 ohms, wire with solder got 0.4-5 ohms, and wire with butt crimps got 0.5ohms. Clearly, when done right, all are perfectly good forms of connections.

Tools Used in Demonstration:

I still prefer solder with heat shrink in terms of aesthetics and long term reliability. If you were to have a proper soldered connection, the wire itself would break under stress before the soldered connection. Later on in the week I will demonstrate how to properly solder a connection along with making a car stereo wiring harness that both looks good and works good.

How to Get Streak Free Windows

Streak free windows are probably considered the most difficult…

Thing to do, but in reality it is very simple. The trick is knowing the right products to use and the right amounts of product to use. You can look online for all of these guides on how to get streak free windows using this expensive product, or this expensive towel, and there will be gimmick after gimmick. I simplified the process to using affordable and simple products. You need the right technique to get the best results and after years of trying different techniques, I finally found my favorite.

Start by getting the right detailing products together

People spend upwards of $10/bottle for glass cleaner when all you need is SprayWay $10 for 4 bottles. It’s used by the professionals when applying tint and other vinyl so yes, it is safe for your tints. The basic toss microfiber can be practically any (not too cheap because it will lint) microfiber. I linked to ones that I use. The trick is to remove all of the dirt and grease off of the window onto the cheaper microfiber before buffing to a streak free window with the Uber glass towel. It doesn’t look like a special towel, but I love it.

Step One – Spray down the window with a fair amount of SprayWay and let it foam up.

Step Two – Wipe down the Window with the toss microfiber , don’t worry about removing all of the streaks just yet. Just remove the residue.

Step Three – Finally buff the glass with your Uber towel to a steak free window

And that is it. All you need for a streak free window is the right combination of products and techniques. Using two towels will give you much better results than one.

Best Way to Wash Your Car in the Winter

So you’re crazy enough to want to wash your car in the winter?

So it’s too cold outside to use a hose, most likely the hose is frozen so even if you wanted to use it, you can’t. So how do you wash all of the dirt, grime, and harmful road salts off of your car? Best way is using a rinseless wash such as Optimum No Rinse (ONR) which I will be using in this demonstration showing you how to wash your car in the winter.

Basically ONR contains polymers that will encapsulate the dirt and grime on your car allowing you to easily wash them off without scratching the paint. ONR can be diluted to be used as a rinseless wash, a quick detailer, and a clay bar lubricant. It is definitely a must have for any detailer, amateur or professional.

In this video I will demonstrate the basic steps on how to wash your car in the winter with a rinseless wash. Afterwords I will also piece together a basic list of step by step instructions to help guide you. The process is fairly simple and once mastered you can be washing your car in under 20 minutes. Not only that, you will be using next to no water!

Fill your 5 gallon bucket ( with Grit Guards ) with roughly 4-5 gallons of water. The washing dilution ratio of ONR is 1 ounce to every 2 gallons so add about 4 ounces of ONR. Then let your wash sponge or mitt soak in the solution for a few minutes.
Presoak the panel with your pre-soaking mix. Use any old sprayer if you are up to the job of spraying an entire car or use an air-assisted spray which will make the job 100x easier. The solution should be diluted to about 8 ounces per gallon (about 1 once for 16oz bottle). You will be working panel by panel, so just presoak the one panel you are washing.
Wash panel in one direction , I prefer to go horizontally in any area I possibly can. Be consistent and do not scrub harshly. Let the sponge and the ONR do the work for you. Always be sure to be well lubricated and clean off the sponge as often as possible to prevent scratches from dirt stuck in your sponge.
Pat dry and gently dry the areas with a clean microfiber. I prefer to first use a basic microfiber followed by a light spray or 2 of ONR with a waffle-weaved microfiber .
Move onto the next panel and repeat the process.

And that is all you need to wash your car in the winter or any time of the year without needing massive amounts water or even access to a hose. I did this entire wash in under 30 degree weather (I was freezing) and had no access to a hose. This method will help you wash off the nasty road salts that Northeastern states flood the streets with every year.

Some basic dilution ratios to remember when using Optimum No Rinse:

Rinseless Wash Solution: 1 once per 2 gallons
Clay Bar Lubricant: 1-2 onces/gallon
Super Slick Quick Detailer: 2-4 onces/gallon

Grit Guards are a Necessary Tool with Detailing

Grit Guards are most useful tool in your detailing arsenal and here’s why…

When you think of washing your car, you think of using a bucket, some sponges, brushes, and soap. But did you know there is one more very crucial tool that should always be on hand? Grit guards have become an industry standard for detailers world wide, and for a good reason too.

So what is a grit guard? The Grit Guard (it’s actually a registered trademark) was developed by Doug Lamb mostly due to the frustration caused by the washing process. When you wash your car, you use the same water that you clean your sponge with. That means, in that same bucket, is all of the debris that you just tried to remove from your car. This is extremely counter-intuitive and not only is it frustrating but it also causes scratching, swirling, and marring in the paint.

So Doug came up with a design that actually holds all of the dirt and contaminants from your wash mitts and wash sponges on the bottom of the bucket. Ultimately this means cleaner water, cleaner sponges, and in the end, less scratches.

So how do you use the grit guard and how do you install it? First you need to buy one, I personally have these and they fit my hardware store buckets just fine, it never floats up, and holds all of the dirt down.

The installation is super easy. Just push the grit guard down into the bucket like this:

Then go on to your normal washing routine and enjoy the clean water. When using a grit guard, you should also follow basic detailing etiquette by using the Two Bucket Method . The only other recommendation that I have is to take out the guard and really clean your buckets every once and a while. Personally I clean mine at the end of completing my client’s vehicles.

Top 5 Mistakes Amateur Detailers Make

Amateur Detailers will always make mistakes, but you won’t…

Ever bring your car to a car wash? Wonder how they can only charge $10 for a full exterior wash and still have 10 guys drying the car? Imagine the abuse the towels receive or even the quality of those towels and the wash chemicals in order to make a profit. Just the thought of a drive through car swash gives me the shivers. You paid thousands for your car, why cheap out on a factor that can increase the value of your car by 20%? We professionals use only the best products designed specifically for a cars delicate paint. But a lot of amateur detailers are just your average Joe with a wash bucket and some soap.

The point of detailing is to pay attention to even the most minute detail. The towels we use are high grade microfiber designed to limit the amount of marring and scratching on the paint and the waxes are specifically formulated to bring out the best shine in modern clear coat.

Here are the top 5 mistakes that an amateur detailer makes on a daily basis:

Dirty Wash Sponge
Never use something that has been sitting in dirt, dust, or any other particles. The sponge or wash mitt has to be clean and free of any damage that could potentially scratch the paint. Also, never use the same sponge you use on the wheels on the paint. That is a big lazy mistake many do. To prevent dirt from building up in your water, the best option is to follow the Two Bucket Method. I wrote a guide on the T wo Bucket Method , go check that out.
Non-lubricating Soap (Dish Soap)
Car soaps, especially professional-grade, are designed specifically to be as lubricating as possible along with being able to suspend any dirt and grime over the paint. Essentially the soap will lift the dirt off of the paint, suspend it within the soap particles, then it can be gently slid away over the lubricating particles. Use the proper soap and you will get the proper results. I’m a huge fan of Chemical Guys products and I recommended to use their PH balanced Citrus Wash in my other guides.
Dirty Water with No Grit Guard (A must have)
Many people just grab any old bucket, fill it up with some water and soap, then be on their merry way… This is horrible and will cause so many scratches and swirls to your paint. First things first, read the guide on the Two Bucket method. This is the proper way to clean a car, and be sure to use a grit guard . These grit guards, I have those exact ones, will hold the dirt and grime to the bottom of the bucket along with providing you a surface to scrub the grime off the sponge with.
Old Body Towels
Welcome to the practice of 99% of drive through car washes and soccer moms alike. Body towels are used to do exactly as they are called, dry your body. Do not use them on your paint, they will severely mar and scratch the paint. Look into buying dedicating waffle weave microfiber drying towels . They are specifically designed to absorb insane amounts of water and not scratch your paint. They are worth the investment and a DIY-er would only need about 2-3 towels.
Skip Straight to Wax
Ever feel the surface of your paint and its rough even after washing thoroughly? That is because there are still very small contaminants stuck into the clear coat. There is only one method to removing these and that is by “Claying” or “Clay Barring.” The method is simple and I will have a much more in depth article coming soon. All you need is some Clay Lubrication and a small Clay Bar. You then basically lube up the location (one panel at a time) and the clay itself and rub the clay against the paint, gently, to pull off the contaminants. This is the final prepping stage before waxing or polishing paint and will help in both the adherence of the wax but also the looks and feel of the paint.

These are mistakes so many detailers and do it yourself-ers have made over the years and will continue to make. Do not fall into this category!

How to Wash Your Car with the 2 Bucket Method

2 Bucket Method, One Car

Washing your car with the 2 bucket method is probably the easiest and most cost-effective preventive maintenance you can ever do for your car. This is a method made by detailers to prevent further scratches and swirling your paint during the washing process. Generally, the washing process causes the most damage so we detailers are trying everything we can to limit the damage done, even if it is small.

When a normal person washes their car, they assume they need the following:

Wash Bucket
Wash Mitt or Sponge
Soap
Drying Towel

That list is correct, but limited and many of the essentials are not listed there. Let’s look at my own personal list for simply washing one of my clients cars:

3 Wash Buckets (One for Soap, One for Rinse, and One for the Rim Degreaser)
2 Grit Guards (You can buy them here )
2 Wash Sponges
Wash Soap
Various Wheel Brushes
Wheel Degreaser
Tire and Wheel Well Degreaser
Drying Lubricant
Multiple Drying Towels

The difference is clear between a DIY detailer and a professional. But it isn’t hard to get the basics down and do your own quality detailing at home! For starters, lets just look at the basic wash process using the 2 Bucket Method.

Head to any local hardware store and pick up 3 of their 5-Gallon buckets. They are very cheap and the third will be useful later on in the detailing process. Mark one bucket rinse and one bucket “soap” and the other “water.”

The soap bucket will be filled up with a mix of your favorite car wash and the rinse will simply be filled up with water. I also recommend getting a tool called the “Grit Guard” to place at the bottom of your buckets to hold down the dirt. These are fantastic little devices that prevent dirt from rising out of the bucket back onto your sponge and at the same time can be used to clean off the sponge from any residual grime and dirt. You can get them on Amazon for cheaper (if you include shipping) than any other vendor I’ve purchased from. I personally have two of these and they have lasted the past 2 years no problems. And if you have trouble finding a good and lubricating wash soap, try out Chemical Guys Citrus Wash Daily . It is super gentle and very concentrated. $10 worth of soap will last a DIY-er months.

The technique for the 2 bucket method from here is very simple:

Soak the wash sponge in the soap bucket
Wash and scrub (GENTLY!) one panel or small section
Dip and rinse sponge in the water bucket
Then dip into the soap bucket
Repeat the process

And there you have it. You now learned the 2 bucket method and this the absolute easiest preventive maintenance for your car and also the beginning to becoming a DIY detailer.
